Castile is home to some of the most beautiful and monumental cities in Europa. We visit two of the most famous; Segovia and Ávila, along with Felipe II's immense monastery and residence El Escorial. Sights include the magnificent Roman aqueduct in Segovia and the impressive city walls of the fortified city of Ávila. Rivalling the spectacle of these cities are the beautiful villages and landscapes, ranging from the endless horizons of the plains of Castile to the dramatic beauty of the Sierra de Gredos mountains as we head towards El Escorial and Madrid.

Tour Route

Pedraza de la Sierra

Today we meet in Madrid and transfer to the beautiful village of Pedraza, with its fine castle and cobbled streets where we will spend our next two nights. The village of Pedraza is often used as a medieval film set due to its unspoilt beauty. To visit Pedraza is to step back in time.
Pedraza de la Sierra

This ride takes us northwards across the Castilian plain towards the medieval town of Sepúlveda. Both Sepúlveda and Pedraza are famous for their roast suckling lamb and pig. We then visit the ruined monastery of San Frutos, and the impressive scenery of the Hoces del Río Duratón, a canyon carved out of the rock by the River Duratón and with the largest colony of griffon vultures to be found in Europe. Watch them as they soar through the canyon below and in the sky above.
Pedraza de la Sierra

We head along delightful country lanes towards the capital of the province, Segovia. En route we have incomparable views of the majestic plain of Castile with its infinite horizons to the north and the mountain range of the Sierra de Guadarrama to the south. Then Segovia itself, with its beautiful Old City, the Plaza Mayor, the Alcázar fortress, and the famous Roman Aqueduct, which according to legend was built by the devil himself. Segovia is indeed a marvellous town to spend the next 2 nights.

This lovely ride takes us past two beautiful palaces. The first is the Palacio de La Granja de San Ildefonso, the magnificent 18th century palace built by Felipe V as a summer residence. Then we continue to the Palacio de Riofrío, set in fine forests where deer and storks are to be seen by the roadside. We then have more time to continue exploring Segovia. 42 - 26 miles

From Segovia we ride westwards with the mountains to our left, until we finally reach the city of Ávila, the highest provincial capital of Spain, surrounded by its magnificently preserved walls. Here we can take an evening stroll around the historical centre and enjoy its marvellous tapas. 77 - 48 miles

Today we cross the Sierra de Gredos, the mountain range between Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha. Beautiful dramatic mountain scenery, where vultures soar over the rocky landscape. Olive trees and cherry blossom decorate the valleys. After an initial ascent, we descend the valley formed by the River Alberche - an easy ride through the very heart of the mountain range. Finally we reach the wine-producing village of Cebreros surrounded by vineyards.
El Escorial

A short ride from Cebreros takes us through pine forests and fine scenery towards the magnificent monastery and summer palace of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, built by Felipe II in the XVI century, burial place of Spanish monarchs and home to a magificent art collection. Here we end the ride and transfer to Madrid to spend our final evening in the marvellous capital of Spain. You may even choose to continue your ride to the city itself.

  • Hybrid e-bike    Road E-bike

The last few years have seen a revolution in the use of e-bikes. We now offfer e bikes on absolutely all of our rides. There are of course multiple advantages to using one on a bike tour:

The difficulty level is lowered by a grade. Thus an intermediate level tour becomes an easy tour as the motor assists pedalling.

The distance you can cycle on each day is effectively "reduced". Longer distances become accessible to a greater range of riding abilities.

Ability levels between riders on the same tour are levelled out as riders can choose an e-bike to enable them to keep up with stronger riders.

No more worrying about the hills!

So if you are in any doubt about whether a particular tour might be too challenging for you, then take the e-bike option. You can still get a good workout by keeping the pedal assistance level low. E-bikes are now available on all of our tours. And many have both the standard e-bike and also the road e-bike.
